Basic Requirements to Get Yourself Enrolled into a Police Academy
It is a rewarding and challenging experience to be in the police force. However, it is crucial not to consider it to be a usual job. It always involves lot of chasing, challenges, action and plenty of paperwork.
By far, a major percentage of today’s younger generation dreams of joining the police force. However, gaining an entry into the police force is not as easy as it appears to be. A person has to be mentally, emotionally, and physically fit if he should be considered eligible to enter into the police academy training. A person dreaming to be a police officer should meet few basic criteria.
It is mandatory that each candidate fulfills few educational requirements in order to get a position in the police force. This requirement varies from one state to another; however, a diploma in high school or its recognized equivalent is a minimum must for each and every candidate who wants to be gifted with the police officer job. Few states also need the prerequisite of an associated bachelor’s degree.
Other Basic Criterion
Other than this educational requirement, a potential candidate needs to be of minimum 18 years age and a citizen of the United States. He should not have been found guilty of any criminal law violation. He should also not have been convicted of adequate number of misbehaviors, which sets a model of disrespect for the law. He should have a good credit history and driving record. There should be no domestic violence charges reported against him.
The candidate’s moral character should be found satisfactory by a background investigation and free from any emotional, mental or physical conditions that could have an adverse effect on his ability to perform the duties of a police officer. He should not have been fingerprinted for doing a fingerprint search to decide the existence of any kind of criminal record. Further, if there are any entrance requirements set by the respective academy, he has to satisfy all the set conditions.
If the candidate satisfies all these conditions, he would be chosen for a job related academic entrance examination. He must get through the written examinations in addition to psychological and physical exams. After he clears these examinations, he would be selected to undergo a rigorous and stressful training session (for a period of approximately 26 weeks) during which he would be trained in many fields that could be pretty exhaustive and enduring.
Every trainee needs to go through an extensive field-based and class-based training in various subjects like different laws, firearm skills, self-defense, stress management, use of weapons, patrolling methods, conflict management skills, investigation methods, ethics, collecting and preserving evidence and more.
Through the course of this training, the trainee would be able to decide clearly about his ideas and thoughts and whether or not he would be able to do justice to his profession of police officer. The trainers would also judge him for various skills. Following the training, he would need to undergo post training examinations post which, he would get his actual posting.
